'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: 'Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind'

Pretty Little LiarsLet's dispatch with the pleasantries and get this over with: Is Toby dead or is this all a ruse perpetrated by the A Team?

By the end of last night's "Pretty Little Liars" episode, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," Spencer had followed Mona into the woods, where she uncovered what appeared to be Toby's body, with the tell-tale "901 Free At Last" tattoo in full view. Yet, Spencer didn't remove the motorcyclist's helmet, meaning we can't be absolutely certain it was Toby. Also, did she check for a pulse? The finer points of the investigatory sciences didn't seem to matter much to Spencer, as she suffered a complete breakdown, wandering in the wilderness for hours until a hiker alerted the authorities, who retrieved her and sent her directly to Radley (which seemed a little too "American Horror Story: Asylum" for my taste).

Beyond the veracity of Toby's demise, my big question is why he had to die in the first place. It couldn't have simply been as punishment to Spencer for blabbing Toby's real identity to the other liars. After all, Toby seemed an integral part of the A Team. Wouldn't he be too valuable to get rid of? Or, perhaps he had served his part and was no longer needed? Whatever the case, I'm going to need a lot more explanation from producers as to the reason Toby needed to die (if he is, in fact, dearly departed).

Of course, this being Rosewood, plenty more shenanigans were afoot as Spencer learned the Toby's tragic truth. Hanna was at work cleaning up her mother's mess (you'll remember from last week's episode that Ashley hit Officer Wilden with her car and fled the scene—only to return hours later with his body nowhere to be found). Hanna insisted her mom call neither the hospital nor her lawyer until they knew the extent of the situation. But no news ever came to light. (Is no news good news in this case? I doubt it.) Well, that is, until Officer Wilden's cruiser turned up in the Marin's garage. And like a pair of mobster lackeys, Hanna and Aria pushed the vehicle into a lake. Was I the only thinking that Wilden's body was probably in the trunk (despite Ashley's sighting of him earlier in the day)? I hope I'm right! But I digress: I agree with Aria that the whole scheme was a horrible idea. There have to be back-up tapes of the surveillance cam recording. Getting rid of the car isn't going to help anything.

When not destroying evidence, Aria was trying to make nice with Ezra's, son Malcolm, who was in town for a few days with his mother as she looked for a job in Rosewood. Aria even babysat the tyke while mom and dad were out and, of course, he hurt himself, necessitating stitches and a whole lot of apologizing on Aria's part. Predictable.

Not to be forgotten, Emily spent much of the episode trying to clear Toby's name and, well, you can see how well that went. Do you think Toby's mysterious, wood-working colleague will play a further role as events unfold? If we know anything about "Pretty Little Liars" it's to suspect everyone.

What did you think about last night's "Pretty Little Liars"? Is Toby really dead? How are the girls going to bust Spencer out of Radley? (Because, obviously, they won't just call Mrs. Hastings. That'd be too easy.) Where do you think Officer Wilden is? When do you think we'll find out who the girl in red is? Tell us everything in the comments and on Twitter!
